38 Dogs Rescued From Unsanitary Conditions in Benewah County

FERNWOOD, Idaho — Idaho Animal Rescue Network, in partnership with Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine and several regional rescue organizations, assisted in the rescue of 38 dogs from a property in Benewah County.

The rescue operation followed reports that the owners were no longer able to adequately care for the animals. When responders arrived, they discovered dogs living in extremely unsanitary conditions. Many were heavily matted, underweight, dehydrated, and suffering from untreated medical needs.

In addition to the surviving dogs, ten deceased dogs were located on the property. Six horses were also removed and evaluated.

Veterinary teams from Washington State University traveled to the property to conduct medical assessments, administer vaccinations, and provide emergency care. Rescue organizations from across Idaho and Washington worked together to transport the animals to safety and begin rehabilitation.

The rescued dogs, primarily doodle mixes and German Shepherds, are now receiving veterinary treatment, proper nutrition, grooming, and behavioral support. Many will require weeks or months of care before becoming available for adoption.

This case is a reminder that neglect can escalate quickly when people become overwhelmed. The most important thing now is that these animals are safe, receiving care, and beginning the road to recovery.
