Our Approach

How Adoption Works

Finding the right match should feel personal, thoughtful, and worth taking the time to get right.

1

You Apply

Tell us about your household, lifestyle, resident pets, and the kind of companion you hope to find.

2

We Look for the Fit

We compare what you’ve shared with what we know about the animal’s personality, needs, energy, and quirks.

3

You Meet

If it looks promising, we arrange a meet and greet so everyone can spend time together and see how it feels.

4

They Go Home

When everyone agrees it’s the right match, we finish the paperwork and your new family member goes home.

We aren’t trying to move animals out the door as quickly as possible. We pride ourselves on a very low return rate because finding the right match is everything. When we say FUREVER, we want it to truly mean forever.

A Few Adoption Basics

Best Fit Comes First

Applications are not processed strictly first-come, first-served. We choose the home we believe best matches each animal.

Meet & Greets

Meet and greets are arranged after an application has been reviewed and approved.

Resident Pets

Resident pets are expected to be appropriately vaccinated and altered unless there is a documented medical reason.

Out-of-Area Adoptions

Out-of-state adopters may be considered, but adopters must generally be able to travel for an in-person pickup.

Questions We Hear A Lot

Adoption FAQ

Every animal is different, but these answers cover the basics of adopting through Idaho Animal Rescue Network.

Do you adopt to people outside Idaho?

Yes. We consider out-of-state adopters when the home is a good fit for the individual animal. Adopters must be able to complete the required process and generally need to travel for an in-person pickup. We do not ship animals.

Why do adoption fees vary?

Adoption fees may vary based on the animal, age, species, medical needs, and the type of care provided before adoption. Fees help offset only a portion of rescue expenses and are not intended to reflect an animal's value.

How does the adoption process work?

Start by submitting an application. We review applications with the specific animal in mind, contact applicants when we believe there may be a good match, and then arrange a meet and greet for approved applicants. If the match is right, the adoption paperwork is completed and the animal can go home.

Is adoption first-come, first-served?

No. We use a best-fit process. The first application submitted is not automatically the application selected. Our responsibility is to choose the home that best matches the needs, personality, and long-term wellbeing of the individual animal.

Can I meet an animal before applying?

Meet and greets are generally scheduled after an application has been reviewed and approved. This helps our foster families manage their time and keeps the process focused on homes that may be a realistic match.

Can you hold an animal for me?

We do not place animals on hold or accept deposits to reserve them. An adoption is not final until the process is complete and the adoption agreement has been signed.

What if I already have pets at home?

Resident pets should be appropriately vaccinated and altered unless there is a documented medical reason. Depending on the animal, we may also recommend or require introductions before finalizing an adoption.

What is included with an adopted animal?

What is included varies by species and age, but dogs are generally adopted after receiving age-appropriate veterinary care, vaccinations, microchipping, and spay or neuter when medically appropriate. Individual profiles will note any special medical or follow-up needs.
